Soaring 440 feet above the Pine Valley Creek Gorge in San Diego County, California, the Neil Irwin Greer Memorial Bridge, also known as the Pine Valley Creek Bridge, was the first cast-in-place segmental concrete bridge in the U.S. With a maximum span of 450 feet, the engineering landmark was also the country’s longest span concrete box girder bridge upon its completion in 1974. TYLin, led by bridge engineer Dr. Man-Chung Tang, played an essential role in the structure’s design.

The bridge’s innovations are a response to a challenging site. By using the balanced cantilever construction method, in which concrete segments are built out from the bridge’s piers, the team mitigated issues with building in a steep valley while reducing material requirements, cost, and environmental impacts to the project area, which is close to a national forest. In a milestone for seismic engineering, the project was the first in the world to conduct a time history analysis for seismic effects with the aid of a modern mainframe computer. (Jensen, 1994)

The structure also demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to context for a civil engineering work of its era. The tapered piers, crowned with concrete bow ties, not only have an aesthetic appeal that harmonizes with their surroundings, but (in an act of engineering foresight) stand ready to support an additional roadway across the bridge, should one ever be needed. On the roadway itself, an open railing allows for sweeping views of the local landscape, including the Cleveland National Forest. More than 50 years after it was constructed, the bridge remains a striking marriage of form and function.
