Working on more than half a dozen paving and infrastructure rehabilitation projects at Los Angeles International Airport since 2018, the Sully-Miller LAX Team has recently completed their most recent improvement project there – Taxiway D.
The project entailed extending the taxiway west to reach a length of 2,300 feet, improve aircraft taxiing operations by enhancing pilot visibility, provide access to the new Terminal 9 and Concourse 0 facilities, and meet the current FAA design standards. Sully-Miller self-performed all of the pavement work, starting with 37,200 cubic yards of 12-inch-deep Lean Concrete Base, and then placed 74,060 cubic yards of 19-inch-deep Type II/V Portland cement concrete to handle the weight of the aircraft on the new taxiways and connectors.
Working onsite at one of the world’s busiest airports, Sully-Miller had to often suspend work due to changing flight schedules and operations, and overcome restricted access issues for concrete trucks in order to ensure delivery of usable, fresh concrete. Despite all of the challenges, the Sully-Miller team beat the targeted July 1st completion date by two weeks and delivered superior concrete pavement taxiways and connectors.
Along with everyone pictured in the first photo, Sully-Miller Team Members on the project include Construction Manager Travis Clausen, Superintendent Steve Gomez, Concrete Superintendent John Flores, Concrete Paving Superintendent Tommy Risse, and Pavement Manager Frank Stevenson.
