Sully-Miller Contracting Co. was recently awarded a $309-million contract by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) for work on Contract 2A of the I-10 Corridor Freight and Managed Lane Project.
Phase 2 of this project involves the construction of a single express lane, with toll facilities, in both directions of the I-10. The stretch of highway undergoing expansion starts at the I-15 in Ontario and extends easterly 6.5 miles through the cities of Ontario, Fontana, and Bloomington. Work began in April, and is targeted to complete in autumn 2029.
The I-10/I-15 interchange is ranked the 10th most critical truck bottleneck in the U.S. by the American Transportation Research Institute, and these improvements will help to relieve congestion in the vicinity of that interchange.
Along with providing improved safety and smoother flow for the great amount of freight traffic that passes through this corridor, the expansion will ease travel for local residents.
The I-10 Corridor Freight and Managed Lane Project will also positively affect the local and national economy with its infusion of jobs and commercial freight traffic with exported and imported goods.
The project scope includes the widening of the roadway and bridge structures, as well as improvements to local access ramps, the freeway system connectors within this stretch, as well as the bridge structures. Also included within the scope are improvements to the auxiliary lanes, and extension of the acceleration and deceleration lanes to enhance trucking operations and safety. It’s projected that the new roadway work will include 110,000 cubic yards of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP).
“This work will showcase Sully-Miller’s expertise in large-scale civil infrastructure construction and maintenance,” stated Bill Boyd, President of Sully-Miller Contracting Co. “We are proud to deliver this project in a safe and efficient manner, and provide high-quality products and service for road users.”
