On December 2nd at the 2021 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards, the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) presented the Southwest Concrete Paving Co. (SWCP) with the Gold Award of Excellence in Military Airports for their superb work at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona. The Gold Award spotlights high-quality workmanship, successful project execution, and creativity in concrete pavement.

SWCP was up against a hard deadline while a military and civilian airshow was simultaneously taking place. On top of that, they were forced to navigate an airfield that was swamped with construction. SWCP overcame material sourcing challenges and paved 82,720 square yards of 11-inch-thick jointed concrete. They erected an onsite Model S Portable Batch Plant at the project to mix 1 ¼” to 1 ½” slump, with horizontal guppies to maximize storage of cementitious material. To ensure that the airfield received a top-quality pavement, they implemented rigorous quality control measures, checking every batch of fly ash that arrived on site.

With more than a decade of Heavy Civil / Airfield Construction experience, SWCP is led by the Nuttall Family, which brings half a century of management expertise to the firm. Airfield Concrete Paving is a qualified specialty of the company, with recent projects at Edwards Air Force Base, Minot Air Force Base, Wake Island, and U.S. Government Airfield Paving projects in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.
