This year, as we celebrate Concrete Pavement Week, we recognize more than just a material—we celebrate the people, innovation, and commitment behind the concrete pavements that connect our communities, support commerce, and keep our transportation system moving. The inaugural Concrete Pavement Week is being celebrated June 28–July 4, 2026, aligning with the anniversary of the signing of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, which created the Interstate Highway System.
For nearly 70 years, the Interstate System has transformed America, and concrete pavement has played a vital role in building and maintaining many of the highways that support our economy and daily lives. In California and Nevada, concrete pavements carry some of the nation’s most demanding traffic—including heavy truck freight corridors, urban freeways, and critical transportation routes through challenging environments.
Concrete pavement is more than a roadway surface. It represents decades of engineering knowledge, craftsmanship, and teamwork. From the operators running paving equipment, to the crews placing and finishing concrete, to the engineers, inspectors, suppliers, and researchers advancing new technologies, every project reflects the dedication of the people who build our infrastructure.
Today’s concrete pavements incorporate innovation in materials, construction practices, sustainability, and long-term performance. These advancements help deliver resilient pavements designed to provide decades of service while reducing maintenance impacts and improving value for the traveling public.
Concrete Pavement Week is an opportunity to thank the workforce that builds these essential assets and to recognize the lasting contribution of concrete roads throughout California and Nevada. From the Interstate highways that move freight and families across the region to local streets and facilities that support everyday life, concrete pavements are a foundation of our transportation future.
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary of the Interstate program, we honor the past, recognize today’s workforce, and continue building the durable, resilient infrastructure needed for generations to come.
